The Swift Index
General Index here. Swift Index - Subjects here. In 1928 William George Swift published the ‘The History of Northcote: from its settlement to a city”. It was commissioned by Northcote City Council. Swift was town clerk of Northcote from 1885 to 1923. He lived in Northcote and the book is a wealth of facts and information gathered from his work with council from its inception in 1888. Unusually many photographs were included. Most of the non-portraits are probably by the keen local amateur photographer and pioneering radiologist Dr William Beckett who lived in Westbourne Gve near the railway. Whilst each chapter had a basic keyword summary there was no index. Not uncommon for history books of the period. Ian A Hughes compiled a surname index to the book in the late 1970s. The attached index brings to the digital domain Hughes’ index combined with a comprehensive subject index. Thus providing an invaluable resource for investigating Northcote’s history. For first time users a quick check of "Swift Index - Subjects” is advised. It has been created to give a quick overview of what is covered in the book. Thus it is a handy ready reckoner to early Northcote. All industries and farms, etc mentioned are thus listed. Example: All banks are listed by name. In keeping with Hughes’ documentation, the surnames have been reproduced as written. Abbreviations have been kept as follows: Abp – Archbishop Bp - Bishop Capt – Captain Dr – Doctor Gov - Governor Mr / Mrs – used when nil first name known Rev – Reverend When identified, an individual is associated with their business – Example: Angior, Samuel (Chemist) Of course any error, transliteration fault is this author’s responsibility and does not reflect on either Swift or Hughes.
